Before your Spray Tan**Do NOT book an appointment if you have had a sunburn and/or peeling within the past 30 days.** A sunburn is UV damage and can take weeks, sometimes months to heal. You may have skin that's about to peel and/or new skin that has just regenerated. Spray tanning over sun damage is unpredictable and can leave you with a very unfavourable outcome. If you'd like pictures, please ask. Most Important Proper and thorough exfoliation and moisturized skin are key to a long lasting and even fading spray tan. Moisturize well and hydrate lots (drink water) in the days leading up to and following your spray tan. The day before your tan -Shave and exfoliate very well. An exfoliating mitt works best. You can pick one up from me, if needed. -Be sure to pay close attention to the area between and under your breasts, your neck, armpits, elbows, knees, ankles and feet. -Any waxing should be done 48 hours prior to tanning. -Facials, manicures, pedicures, massage, etc should be done the day before your spray tan. Lash extensions are fine before your tan. The day of your spray tan -If you plan to shower, do it at least 4 hours before to be sure your pores have closed, PH reset, and skin has completely dried. Even better, skip the shower, unless you have been sweating, then just a quick rinse. -Do not use any soaps containing creams, or oils, as those can stick to your skin. Be sure to wash all shampoo/conditioner off of your skin. Do not use Dove or Olay body wash products, as they coat your skin. -Absolutely no lotion, cream, deodorant, perfume or makeup should be worn to your appointment. These can act as a barrier and prevent an even tan. You can wash off here, if needed. -If you have very dry skin, an approved lotion can be applied the morning of your tan. It should be completed absorbed before your appointment. What to wear during your spray tan -This is completely up to you and your comfort level. Women may wear bra/panties, swimsuit, or nothing at all. Men must wear some covering on the bottom. G-String, boxers or shorts are fine. -Bring dark, loose fitting clothes (long sleeves and long pants) and flip flops to wear home. Tight clothing is not good for a fresh tan. It needs time to develop. -If it's raining, wear loose boots/shoes and bring an umbrella. |
After your Spray TanDevelopment time will be determined at the time of your tan. -This means that we will decide if you want an overnight or a rapid rinse tan. Either way, I will let you know how many hours to wait before having a rinse. The first shower after any tan is warm water only (not hot) -The colour that you see rinse off in the shower is only the bronzer washing away. Your tan is still working its magic! You may experience the "bronzer blues" but trust the process. Your tan will be back! No soap in your first shower. Pat dry with a towel. Do not rub -Do this for the entire length of your tan. No soap and no lotions for 24 hours after your spray tan -Your tan colour can develop for up to 24 hours. Avoid shaving for the first 24 hours. After that, shave minimally and always with a new razor. Moisture strips on razors can remove a tan. A sharp, basic razor is best. Avoid products containing alcohol and/or mineral oils -They will eat away at your tan. Avoid Dove and Olay products, some bar soaps, and heavily scented products. Natural is best. Sleeping in long sleeves and pants is highly recommended -Especially if you haven't rinsed off before bed. It keeps your tan colour from transferring to other body parts and sheets. Try not to touch your face/body -You can end up with discoloured fingers/palms. -Be careful not to drag your hands on your skin when pulling pants up/down After 24 hours MOISTURIZE MOISTURIZE MOISTURIZE -Twice a day, if possible, moisturize with an oil and alcohol free body lotion. Best product of all is my "Dandy Tan" tan extending lotion. I have tan safe products available for purchase in studio. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What does "House of Dandy" mean, anyway?
"House" refers to fashion houses, such as Dior, Versace, Chanel, who specialize in couture, high-fashion. It's also a nod to drag houses, which are a family of drag queens. I might be a little obsessed with RuPaul's Drag Race!
"Dandy" is my alter ego. I love vintage pinup and often go by this name.
Historically, "dandy" was the term used to refer to a gentleman who placed significant importance on his physical appearance, following fashion trends and always presenting as well dressed and well groomed. I'm not a man but so what. I've made it my own.
And finally, my studio is in my home, so the name seemed perfectly fitting! Come on in for your "Dandy Tan"!
What is a spray tan? How does it work?
An airbrush spray tan is a liquid solution containing a certain percentage of DHA (dihydroxyacetone) that is sprayed in a fine mist onto your skin. To put it simply, it's a sugar derived from plants. Whether you get a spray tan or use self tanning products at home, this is the ingredient that tans your skin. It works by adhering to the top layer of protein in your skin and reacts to your body's own chemistry, or ph. There are often many other great ingredients added to benefit your skin, such as aloe, vitamins, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, etc.
It's like skin care with the added bonus of a tan!
How long will my appointment take?
You will never be rushed at House of Dandy. I want you to be comfortable the entire time you're with me. If it is our first tan together, we will have a chance to a consult . We will discuss your skin and what type of colour you're hoping to achieve. We'll go over any plans you have to make sure we choose the exact right solution for your lifestyle. The actual spraying takes 5-10 minutes. I'll guide you in the positions to get the most even tan possible. I like to call this "tanning yoga" or "spray tan gymnastics", as we all have different body shapes and our skin folds in different areas. You don't need to worry about this. That's my job. After I spray you, I will lightly dust you with a setting powder, and you will be able to get dressed right away. My solutions dry quickly and are not sticky.
How long does it last?
This is different for everyone and will vary based on skin type, lifestyle, and proper pre/post care. Because it sits on the top layer of skin, it is vulnerable to things like water, sweat, tight clothing and friction. The more you baby your spray tan the longer it will last. Avoid activities that will keep you in the water for too long, especially chlorine. It is bleach, after all. The more moisturized and hydrated your skin is, the longer it will last. A good average is 1 week but spray tans can last anywhere from 5-10 days. Most of my clients are 7-10 days.
Will a spray tan protect me from the sun?
NOOOOOOO!!!!! You MUST wear SPF!!! The recommended level used to be SPF 15 but dermatologists (skin doctors) and oncologists (cancer doctors) now recommend a minimum of SPF 30. I personally use SPF 50 and I still tan through that. You can still get a tan with sunscreen on, it will just take longer and keep your skin safer. We only get one skin. It's our house, if you will. Look after it. The sooner you start, the happier you will be as you get older. Trust me!
Look for sunscreens that are oil and alcohol free, and opt for "Reef Safe" sunscreen, if you can. Let's protect our oceans, lakes and rivers! SunBum, Blue Lizard, ThinkSport, Green Beaver, Badger, and Coola offer cruelty free and reef safe options that are safe for spray tans. They are available online and at London Drugs. Choose lotions over sprays. Mineral sunscreens are best!
The "base tan" myth
Do you need a base tan before going on vacation? NO! This was a myth created by the UV tanning industry. Think about it...it's pretty smart marketing, considering most people go on vacation. UV tanning beds are so dangerous that they are actually banned in some countries now, like Australia. Even in Canada they have been banned for people under 18.
